Review: Trees Volume 1

So I know this isn't a trending book in booktube, but once I saw that Warren Ellis was the author I knew I wanted to read this. Let's just say that his writing has never let me down. I will admit that was the only reason I wanted to read this aside from the cover and title I had no idea what this was about.

Once I started reading this I discovered just what a gem this truly is. Let's set this up for those who do not know about this amazing series. These cylinders have arrived in the future. They just sort of chose to plant themselves in certain cities around the world. No one knows what they are. Some imagine that there are intelligent beings inside waiting to come out at some point, but they have stood silent for 10 years....just standing there. So of course, scientists are going to investigate these things, and this is where the fun begins. This had a really eerie sci-fi kinda feel like Prometheus, and some other dark sci-fi films.

What made this so enjoyable for me was just seeing the way humanity reacts to these behemoths and how culture changes in the shadows of them. The anticipation of what would happen also made this fun to read. If you are a fan of dark sci-fi then this is for you. I am already reading the second volume, as it was that good. I rated this 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Review: Fight Club 2

Pretty much everyone has seen the film Fight Club.  I will admit I enjoyed the film but have yet to read the book that it is based on. But even though I have not read the novel I jumped at the chance to read and review it's sequel.
If you enjoyed the film I do think that you will enjoy this continuation of the story. Sebastian and Marla have moved on from Project Mayhem and even have started a family.

So Sebastian has been trying to keep Tyler buried in his subconscious, by taking his prescribed medications.  But Marla misses the hot sex that she had with Tyler. So she has been tampering with Sebastian's meds. "Tyler Durden Lives"...literally. He comes back and so does all of the madness that we saw in the Fight Club film. If that were not the whole situation but now they have a son, and he is in the middle of this. Which makes for an even more interesting story.

Another thing that this sequel proposes is just who is Tyler Durden? What is he exactly? These questions open up a whole 'nother scenario that I cannot get too deep into, and even cannot share a photo from the series because it is too spoilerly.

The author, Chuck Palahniuk even stars in this sequel. I know strange, right? I can't talk about his role in this either because of....you guessed it. Spoilers!?!

I know a few fans were disappointed with the way that this ended, but seriously? You cannot take a franchise like Fight Club too serious anyways. Yes, the ending was way over the top , kinda rushed, and dumb. But it is what it is, and I enjoyed the ride there. I decided to rate this 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. I really enjoyed this and I think fans of the film, and possibly the book will too.

Review: Hellboy in Hell Vol. 2 Death Card

If you are like me then you absolutely love Hellboy. To be honest I don't think I have ever read a bad Hellboy book or even one that I did not enjoy. Of course one of the good things about Mignola's Hellboy is his stylistic drawing style that emphasizes heavy lines of shadow.

But enough of why Hellboy is so good. I read Hellboy in Hell Vol. 1 and of course I enjoyed that one too. So when I got the opportunity to read and review the follow-up, and finale for this series I jumped at the chance. This continues on with Hellboy's adventure through Hell. It features short stories about different people who have gone to Hell for some reason or another. Now I do not know if these are based on actual people, but there was a section of the book where it talked about them as if they were real people. The title is Death Card due to one short story being based on a gambler who could never lose. I really enjoyed reading this, and I rated it 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. This releases on Oct. 18, 2016. Below I have included a link so you can pre-order a copy now.

Review: The Fade Out Vol. 2

I just finished this trade last night. If you are not familiar with this series it is a murder mystery that takes place in Hollywood's hey day. So it has that classic feel.
I will admit that the beginning of this was not very fun to read it seemed disjointed and was all over the place...jumping between different events. But it does pick up around the mid point of the book, and resumes where I think it should have to continue the mystery.

I will say that this is definitely not for kids, as the sex scenes get pretty hot and heavy...it is Image after all and they push the limits when it comes to sex. Of course it ended on a cliff hanger... I decided to rate this 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. Below I have included a link to buy your own copy.

The Last Week in Review? 8/19/16

I have decided that due to short viewer attention I am going to greatly reduce the books I review, and some weeks I may not upload at all. It's based on what is being viewed and I cannot justify uploading long vids if no one is watching and responding. If you want to see this series to continue on then you can comment and say so -

Some Games I Really Want to Play For PS4

I don't usually get excited about new games for the PS4, but when I saw that these were out I just knew that I wanted to play them badly.

First up is Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness. This is an RPG(role-playing game). I played Star Ocean 2 on the PS2 many years ago. I was very impressed with this series at the time because it had a system where you could farm materials and then combine them with recipes, enchants, and upgrades, etc. I hope that this new game retains some of the appeal that the older one had.

Next up is Injustice 2. Which is a sequel of course of the DC Comics themed fighting game of the same name.  This series has been produced by the makers of the Mortal Kombat franchise. The look, play and feel is very much like the Mortal Kombat games. If you know the combos and moves in those games you can easily pick them up in the Injustice games. Being a comics fan I am very excited to play this and it releases Dec. 31, 2017.

Another game I am excited about and one that my friend told me about is No Man's Sky. This is an open universe space exploration game within a very large universe in which you can explore. The player can be the first to explore regions of space and discover new life forms. I have heard someone say that it is Minecraft in space, and I really hope it is not exactly like that as I am not a fan of that series.

Last but not least is Spiderman. I played a similar looking game on the PS2 called Ultimate Spiderman, but this new one looks like a major improvement on the gameplay. Imagine playing as Spiderman.....being a comics fanboy this will be a great game to check out! It releases Dec. 29, 2017.

Outcast Vol. 2 Review

So I just finished this trade last night. I had a digital copy of this so that is why I decided to feature it here instead of on my Youtube channel. I have to say that I found this volume to be much better than the first volume. This volume reveals a little more of the mystery just enough to keep you wanting more. We learn the theory behind why some people seem to be fine after an exorcism and why some seem to go into a comatose state. Just what does it mean to be an "Outcast"? I will admit I was kinda angry that it ended rather abruptly on a cliff hanger, and I wonder(as I have yet to see the Cinemax show) if the TV series is a literal translation. I am still kinda creeped out by the man in the business suit who threatens the reverend and I have an idea of who he is, but I can wait to see if it is revealed further in the series. I rated this volume 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads, and I am excited to keep reading this series.

Here are the first 2 volumes of this series.
Here is the pilot!

Book I Want to Read Badly! New Release

I have been a huge fan of the Dune Series since I first got hooked on the SyFy Original Series debut. This film adaptation of the first book in the series made me want to read this series. I read each and every book from Frank Herbert's series and even kept up by reading the series prequels by his son, Brian Herbert. I do have to say that these are just as good as his father's books, and even if they are not from his father's notes I would still enjoy them because I trust that he knew his father well enough to know the direction he had intended for this series.
So the reason for this post is that there is a new book in the series that comes out September 13,2016. As I have read every book I am highly anticipating this latest release...it's about the Navigators, which are kind of elusive and mysterious in their own right. If you too are a fan of this great scifi series I hope that you will pick this up when it releases. I know that I will get my own copy somehow and review it.

Orphan Black Comics(Media Tie Ins)

I'm assuming you have discovered this post because you are a fan of the Orphan Black TV series. Most fans of the BBC America show are unaware of the media tie in comic book series. I too did not know about these comics until I got the chance to read and review Orphan Black: Helsinki from Netgalley. This volume helped to flesh out the characters that were recently introduced in this past season of the show.  I enjoyed learning about Mika, and her involvement in discovering the clone conspiracy.
These comics help to fill in some of the gaps in the TV show. It's not required reading but if you want to learn more about the characters I would suggest reading these books. Below I have included links to where they can be purchased.

I hope you enjoy these as much as I have, and thank you for reading this brief post. Please feel free to subscribe to see more geeky posts.

This Week in Review: 7/29/16

I have decided to be even more selective in the books I decide to share, as I have eliminated some of the books I have read and reviewed this week -
1. 2. 3. 4.

5. 6.

Bedlam Vol. 1

Hmmm... where to start.
Let's start by introducing you to the city of Bedlam. It's kind of similar to Batman's Gotham, and it has a villain similar to the Joker, but 100x more homicidal. His name is Mad Redder, and basically he's a serial killer. Serial in the fact that he kills men, women, and even children!(scary, huh?)

So this guy decides to plan a scheme where he lets the public think he has killed himself, but in reality, he has gone into hiding. While in the care of a doctor he becomes reformed and decides he wants to redeem himself for all of the pain he has inflicted upon the residents of Bedlam. Of course, the city of Bedlam has other villainess killers within its domain. He calls a detective working a current murder investigation and offers to help her solve the crime. And this is what the first volume of this series consists of.

I really liked this and thought the flashback scenes which were in shades of grey and reds were interesting. I rated this 4 out of 5 stars on goodreads, and am looking forward to reading volume 2.

Stranger Things Season 1 Review

Lately, it seems that people are obsessed with things from the '80's. SO it's not really surprising to see a show with this theme. If you have not heard of this series yet....I would be surprised if you had not as everyone seems to be talking about it.
Every episode starts out with a scene where something happens to get you interested in seeing more, and then the title scene which kinda reminds me of some old '80's movies such as Stephen King's Cat's Eye or Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. There is even some toned down coloring to the logo and the eerie music really enforces this classic horror movie feel.

So the first episode starts out with the introduction of Will and his friends playing D&D. Immediately we get a liking to these kids because "hey that was us". Will rides home afterward and is approached by something we never quite see until much later in the series. After the title scene, we learn that he has disappeared.
The disappearance of Will and the mystery of just what it was is the main part of this show. Almost as a replacement, another character soon appears as a girl named "Eleven".  She is just as mysterious as the creature that has abducted Will. I will say no more about this series so as not to spoil it if you have not seen it.

This is definitely one of those shows that will have you hooked and I will admit that I watched all 8 episodes in 2 days. I was very impressed with this series, and the acting of Winona Ryder, although one of my friends was annoyed by her and thought someone else would have made the role better. I think she did a very good job of portraying a distraught mother who would do anything to get him back. The friendship between the boys as they imagine this to be like one of their D&D adventures to rescue their friend also made this quite enjoyable. I rated this 5 out of 5 stars, and cannot wait to see the second season. I do hope that any further seasons of this series will not disappoint.
