Mentats of Dune

I have been reading Mentats of Dune for the last few weeks, and I have to say that Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson still have it.  This novel focuses on  the story of Gilbertus Albans, and his school for mentats. It also tells about the events in the Dune universe, such as the war between the Spacing Guild, and the Butlerians.  I absolutely love this series, and one of the reasons why I enjoy it so much is because the events in these novels are believable as compared to other science fiction.  I first decided to read this series after having watched Syfy channels original film of Dune. I later found out that this was a more accurate version of Frank Herberts classic story. I know that most people are all fond of the 1984 Dune, but the later, and much newer version is true to the story that Herbert had written. I just thought that the 1984 one that everyone knows was just a bit over the top, and not very real.

I'm still looking forward to Princess Irulan's story which should be out sometime in the near future. But until then I may re-read some of the other books in the series.

5 Guys Burger Joint Review

5 Guys is overrated, and overpriced. I say this because all I ever hear is how great this burger chain is from folks. When you walk in, and I have to say that I do not know if all locations are like this, but all they have for wall decorations are segments of "rave" reviews from national publications gracing the walls.  I went to this one specific location with my wife, and we thought it was going to be like going to Red Robin. If you have never gone to Red Robin before and you like good burgers then you must visit your nearest location. So we expected "gourmet" burgers, as everyone talked about how great their food was. We also thought that it would be a sit down establishment instead of just another fast food burger joint. We ordered two bacon cheeseburgers, and while yes the toppings are free....most didn't sound that appealing or perhaps it was the very plain red and white menu board that gave me that impression. We also ordered two regular size cajun french fries, because we had also heard how great those were too. We didn't order drinks, because frankly the order was already quite pricey at just over twenty dollars. I just went there and honestly I'm not impressed. The decor is so plain with the red and white checkered theme, and the carts of potatoes with boxes of peanuts that you are not sure if they are a waiting snack or part of the decor. I say this about the peanuts in the box because the other patrons who were waiting on thier food didn't even acknowledge that there were peanuts. I mean they just kind of blended into the plain decor as if they are not even there. When I got my overpriced hamburger I was so disappointed as it was nothing special. This seemed like the kind of burger I could have made for myself in my own kitchen....nothing spectacular whatsoever. If you have never been there you have to request the condiments to be added because they DO NOT even put ketchup on them unless you request it. The bacon was burnt and the cajun fries were over seasoned. Not too mention no ranch to dip the overly spicy fries...ONLY ketchup, and malted vinegar which you dispense yourself. To top it all off I had the worst stomach cramps later that nite from eating there.

Mignola's Vampires

There are so many varieties of vampires in fiction nowadays. From sparkly Twilight vamps to vicious rip your throat out 30 Days of Night by Niles. I have read so many books about vampires, and some have rather impressed me while others were just okay.
One book series that has impressed me by being different, but remaining entertaining are Mike Mignola's take on the vampire myth.  I will admit that I read the sequel first before I read the starting book to the series.  I liked the classical feel that he used to tell the tale of a vampire hunter set during the early 20th century.  Mignola's vamps are not just undead who drink blood, but are shape shifting ghouls who also feast on the flesh of the dead, and near dying. He describes them as carrion creatures.

The volume shown above is a graphic novel, and is drawn very similar to the style that Mignola is known for in his Hellboy comics. So when I picked up which I later discovered to be the start of the series I expected it to be a graphic novel too. The starting book to the Baltimore series is actually an illustrated novel that he had co written with another author. This book tells the story of how Lord Baltimore came to be a vampire hunter, and also reveals some other supernatural mythology as told from the point of view of a few people that know him. Even though it was different than I had expected I still found this to be a very good read, and one that I would recommend to others who enjoy the vampire genre.

I have also written a list of vampire books that I feel are worthy of being read found here - Best Vampire Books
